How To Get Your Perfect Career
All the reasons you are stuck in a profession you don’t like and want to get out of don’t really exist. You have the ability to shift careers and do what you love.
1. Job hunt all the time.
You’re managing your career all the time, so if you’re not constantly looking around to see what opportunities are there for you, how will you find them? No one is steering your career for you. If you don’t have long-term goals that you’re working toward every day, your career is going nowhere; you’re treading water in the workplace instead of swimming.
I love Penelope Trunk’s advice and think this article is an important read for anyone not entirely happy with their career. Penelope suggests that it’s all in your control so you should take control.

I thought the article was mostly rubbish, point one was good.
One golden point that worked for me as I searched for a perfect career: Never stop studying and learning. Gain more mastery over your field, or expand your fields. I did a ton of study, and added a golden line to my resume: “Publications” (which honestly, was just my paper uploaded in PDF form to my website). Because of my single publication, I got a job that doubled my pay, focused on what I researched, and didn’t involve an interview. Took almost a year to do the paper and get noticed, but worth it.
That one should be on the list, and many of the other points could be better refined.

“The world doesn’t appreciate substance over style in real life, only in philosophy classes”
“pay attention to what researchers say will make you happy. This is brain science, and you’re the just the same as the rest of the human race.”
Shame on you lifehack – most of that article was some very bad journalism, except for the excerpt above. Far from being enriched as normal, I am now just frustrated that more people will read this garbage.

That was pretty bad. Lifehack will always have a slot in my Google Reader, but I don’t think I’ll be following anymore links.

Thanks Alex, that’s a really good idea. I had some things written that I never published, but something as simple as that would really help my resume.
