The term ‘selfie’ refers to pictures you take of yourself, usually on your phone or webcam, with the intent of uploading them on some form of social media. Historically, ‘selfies’ began with portraits of kings and queens, particularly in Europe.

“I look #dope in that selfie”
– Anne Boleyn, 1533.

Okay, I don’t think anything from those last two sentences is true but I’m finding it hard to compete with the remarkable amount of information in this infographic about selfies. Selfies, as they are known today, actually began with Myspace and have continued to gain popularity ever since. Everyone is taking selfies, from politicians to celebrities, even The Pope is in on it. Oh, and just in case you’re wondering what this little ‘#’ symbol is for it’s a hashtag used to tag keywords and phrases in social media, usually Twitter or Instagram.
