At some point or another, you’ve definitely opened your refrigerator and wondered, “Is it okay to eat this?” Whether you ate it or not– no judgment!– you still probably had some doubts in the back of your mind about just how expired the food in question was. Thanks to Buzzfeed, you’ll never again have to do that tricky dance. A new video put out by the website examines various food items and how long it takes for them to go bad. As a general rule, if it smells off, don’t eat it, but there are other foods that have more specific suggestions on when to throw them out.

For example, throw away most meat after a week or so (unless you freeze it, in which case it could last for months). Eggs typically last about a month, while egg salad lasts only a few days. And what about foods that offer a sell-by date, but not a use-by? Milk is one such product, and it should last about a week after the label printed on the carton.
