Everyone knows that some less than desirable things happen to their food during processing, but what’s really lurking inside your fridge and pantry might surprise you. The United States is notorious for its lax laws when it comes to food safety. Even though every ingredient has to be listed on all food products sold, some ingredients are given different names to disguise their true identities from wary consumers. For example, castoreum is a beaver product that roughly translates to “beaver anal secretions.” Information like this should make us all think twice about what we eat on a daily basis.
