Reading a person’s emotional cues is useful for much more than a game of poker. The ability to recognize subtle signs of certain emotions in someone can help you navigate new friendships and romantic relationships, understand someone through a language barrier, or realize when someone is being dishonest. It can simply help you be a more empathetic person.

While some wear their emotions on their sleeve, others may be naturally better at hiding the more obvious signs of how they feel. But for the most part, facial expressions are a universal language for emotions. There are ways to pick out signs of particular emotions through the sturdiest poker face.
