It is clear that most societies have predetermined roles for men and women to play, and if they err from those roles, they are generally regarded as weird or different in some way. But why is this the case? How did those gender roles come to be, and why should we feel bound to them? I am not suggesting that these roles need to be completely eradicated, leaving no trace in our daily actions, I am simply suggesting that we examine the reasons behind our actions.
The video below, released by Buzzfeed, reveals how deeply ingrained some of these gender-based behaviors can be, to the point that we don’t even realize them until the gender roles are reversed. It also points out how ridiculous it would be if celebrity gossip magazines focused primarily on the weight of male celebrities, and if action movies featured female stars more regularly than males. It is a comical yet thoughtful look at how we enact gender roles on a daily basis.
