Simple acts of human kindness can brighten someone’s entire day, but those who need their day brightened the most are all too often ignored or forgotten. That’s why Mark Bustos, a New York City hair stylist, decided he wanted to give back to some of the people who needed kindness the most: the homeless.

The stylist spends every one of his Sundays — the one day a week he doesn’t have work — walking around the city in search of anyone in need of a haircut or a shave who can’t afford it, as many as five or six people each time.

Along the way, he documents some of his work on his Instagram account, challenging others to give selflessly in any way they can.

“Ashley, 24, escaped an abusive relationship, which landed her on the streets for the past 2 months. She gathers just enough money throughout the day to sleep in a hostel at night. A Haircut and a Caramel Frappuccino from Starbucks brightened up her day.” (pictured below)
