Read The Instructions Before Proceeding With Life

We would all love to be able to have the answers to life’s boundless questions. A road map for life. Yet that is not possible. We can only strive to be the best versions of ourselves and confront the problems or questions that lie ahead of us without causing harm to others or ourselves. So how can we ‘live well’ on a daily basis?

If there’s a manual for life, what would it be?

A Manual For Living by Epictetus is just what it is. A manual. A book that you can refer to for instructions or guidance on how to live a meaningful life.

In A Manual For Living, Epictetus focuses on how to practically apply oneself on a philosophical level. It is a book that points out different scenarios or situations in life, and how individuals should reframe their mindset or view it from a different perspective. One that will allow them to be more accepting of the cards that have been dealt to them and finding meaning and happiness on earth.

Accept that you don’t have total control

Some things are in your power and some are not—do not confuse the two and do not desire the things that are not in your power. It is our opinion of things that determines how we feel about a particular event, not the event itself. Think carefully about how you spend your life because people often spend their lives chasing things that are neither as desirable nor as important as they seem.

Remember, if you think the things that are in the power of others are in your own power, then you will be hindered, frustrated, and annoyed. If you desire to do great things, then remember that you must give those things your undivided attention and leave other things alone for the time being.

Before setting your sights on a goal, make sure that it is a goal that is within your power — that is, something you actually have control over — and if it is not within your power, do not let it concern you.

These are but some of the values and wise words of wisdom that can be found in the book which will no doubt add great value to your life. If you have already heard those words, let it be another resounding reminder of why it is so important to live by them.

Book Summary: The Power of Habit in 2 Minutes

Habits stick because they create craving.

Kicking a bad habit is hard because you develop a craving for the reward at the end of the habit loop. The golden rule of changing any habit is: don’t resist craving, but redirect it. Keep the same cues and rewards, but change the routine that occurs as a result of that craving.
