4 Ways To Reduce Your Online Business Carbon Footprint (And Their Benefits)

4 Ways To Reduce Your Online Business Carbon Footprint (And Their Benefits)

It’s general knowledge that online businesses are greener than offline business, yet, there are ways you can make your activity even more environment friendly. As millennials are concerned about the environment and aim to use and live, leaving as few waste behind, making your business greener is definitely going to set you apart from your competition.

Apart from becoming more attractive for generation Y and saving the planet, you can actually cut your maintenance costs by going greener. An environment friendly business means lower electricity costs and lower equipment costs. Moreover, your employees are going to thank you – according to studies, employees working in green companies reported fewer sick days on average.[1] Other studies link an increase in productivity to environmentally friendly organizations.[2]

With this in mind, here are some of the ways you can make your online business even more green than it already is.

1. Use green servers

Web hosting is one of the sources of pollution, as servers are responsible for 2% of the global green house emissions.((the Guardian: How viral cat videos are warming the planet) This means that when you have a site you are contributing to the pollution. Luckily, there are ways to counteract this: go for a green web server.

Apart from reducing the carbon footprint, these servers have a couple of benefits. First, you can opt for a dedicated server, which is able to run with a large amount of data. Second, these servers run on renewable energy, which means they are not affected by power shortages. As for their performance level, they are just as powerful as traditional servers.

2. Hire remote workers

Having office space is costly and promotes pollution from multiple points of view. If you really want to make a difference, go remote. This means operating the entire business from home and using project management tools to keep track of work. Apart from not having to pay rent and bills for an office, your employees don’t have to spend on transportation, which can also come as a benefit for you when you have to make their payments.

3. Keep the meetings live

When you are working remotely you will have to conduct physical meetings from time to time, but you can keep most of the meetings live. Use Webinar, Skype and live streaming tools to conduct webinars and meetings. You are going to save lots of time and money as well as simplify the workflow.

Once you’ve conducted an online training or meeting, it can be recorded and you can reuse it when you need to. This makes training new employees easier and it cuts the costs of actually having to meet and train the new people.

And there is another benefit to live streaming and webinars: you can keep in touch with your customers without having to set up a store or an office. One of the most important lessons online businesses can take away from offline businesses is keeping in touch with customers. Skype and live streaming apps enable you to do this in a more environment friendly way and provides a highly effective marketing tool.

4. Cut the paper

Another great way to ensure your online business is green is to cut the paper consumption. Depending on how adventurous you are, you can digitize your work (almost) completely. Before you attempt this, you have to implement strong security policies to make sure your important documents will be safe; then you can start quitting the paperwork. The most paper consuming department of any business is the financial one, but there are plenty of tools and software you can use to keep track of receipts and reports, implementing a digital system. Your employees are going to rejoice at the thought of not having to manage hundreds of papers and their productivity will increase.

As you can see, going green is definitely beneficial for both the environment and the company, so there are virtually no reasons to ignore this new trend. Especially because in the future it will become mandatory to operate a green organization.

Is It Necessary To Follow Traffic Rules?

Is It Necessary To Follow Traffic Rules?

On a daily basis, we constantly hear news about different forms of road accidents, either because of some stupid drivers who recklessly drives their vehicle, over-speeding, and the list goes on. The dumbest mistakes people ever make we put all the blame to our government – for providing insufficient funds to spend with road widening, infrastructure upgrades, better traffic system, and best walkie-talkie[1] or radar speed gun for law enforcement. The lack of employment, low quality of education, corruption, sudden increase of necessity prices, and the unfinished road construction projects. Sometimes, we, as citizens, often forget that we also play a very important role in the chain process, and thus we should not put all the blame to our government.

Common Sense

There is no point denying that it is actually the government’s role to provide us good road and road signs. But if citizens do not actually follow these traffic rules as the basis of standards, how can they ever guarantee our safety? Yes, you may excuse yourself for not knowing the standard safety measures, but come on! We are not children anymore. Simple 1-2-3’s and a little common sense will do.

Motorcycles

Owning a car or a motorcycle is great; it helps keep us on track in our fast paced lives. But, if we do not abide by the simple safety driving procedures, you definitely are at risk. In 2012, Los Angeles County alone, 59% motorcyclists were killed. This is more than 2010. And by 2013, California ranked third for motorcycle fatalities.[2] Thus, it is very important to buckle up your belts, wear your helmet and follow the traffic lights and other street signs. They serves as a warning. There could be some dangerous road ahead or any untoward incidences, and once you will not follow this and take proper precaution, trouble always meet you ahead, either a severe accident or a police honking you to pull over. And you know what will happen next.

Walking

People who lives some blocks away from their workplace usually prefer to take a walk instead of driving their vehicle. This could save them a considerable amount of money on fuel. Plus it is a great way to exercise. Even so, although you are simply walking, it still is important to follow the road traffic signs. Wait for the green signal before crossing the lane, no matter if you are in a hurry or not. A lot of road accidents happen because some passersby merely doesn’t follow the traffic light signals. Also, do not forget to walk only in between the white lanes, or the so-called pedestrian lines.

Final Thoughts

The issues and problems on the roads will never be resolve and forever will stay unless the citizens truly realize how necessary it is to follow traffic rules and regulations. As drivers, we are suppose to stay on our right lane, steer at the right speed, and follow every traffic sign. As pedestrian walkers, we are expected to cross at the right place, at the right time. If each party cooperates, we can achieve a harmonious flow of traffic.

Of course, we all live in an era where all of us are in a hurry and one simply cannot afford to waste time. But, being hasty can bring a lot more trouble and can basically cause more delay. There is no mad science to resolve road accidents or to keep ourselves safe and secure while on the streets. It all depends if all of us will submit to the traffic rules the government has set before us.

What are your thoughts about following traffic rules?
