Change Your Life Today By Asking Yourself One Question

At the risk of wading too far into the baloney-cliche filled pool of positive thinking, affirmations, and morning routines I want to suggest that you ask yourself one question every morning—what am I going to be excited about today?

Yesterday morning, for me, it was the 2016 Presidential Election—that excitement was stifled by day’s end, but that’s not the point. Today, I woke up and decided to be excited about listening to the commentary about last night’s historic upset. I find it all fascinating.

Tomorrow, it will be something completely different. Maybe it will be something easy to get excited about like the start of a vacation. It could be something common like the weather or a special event like the season finale of a TV series.

Find that one thing!

The point is to wake up in the morning and find that one thing that sets the tone for your day—that thing that generates a little spark of joy when you think about it. This is an opportunity to glean a little more joy out of whatever that thing is before it even arrives! Do this every day and it will change your life.

While this may seem to be at odds with the commonly suggested advice of living in the moment,  I don’t think it is. I think it prepares you to fully enjoy the moment when it arrives. Just be sure to pay attention when it does.

In the morning, think, “Aah! today is the day for (fill in the blank). How nice.” You pick your thing then go about your day.
