When you meet someone, like a client or peer, do you immediately Google them? I don’t exactly do that, but when I was responding to internet ads for sharehousing I found myself submitting people’s emails into Myspace’s people search.
It’s amazing what you can find out about a person through these things, and you should be weary of that, because employers do the same thing.
Your blog is serious business.
It has the power to completely sway someone’s opinion about you. It fulfills the needs of lurkers everywhere who Google you to see what kind of person you are. Show them your best. (if you’re looking for work this is extremely important)

I try to be pretty careful about what I post online, keeping this very thought in mind.
Of course, my name is so common, that my blog is the 26th result when I search for “Mike Scott”. So I’m hoping that there isn’t some other Mike Scott out there making me look bad. :-)

I have the same problem… my name is so common that I feel like I don’t have as much control over my online image as I’d like. Thankfully, my websites have slowly been making their way up in Google results.
It’d be better if the other people with my name didn’t also do many of the things I do, design and photography. I guess when you have a common name, location becomes your other identifier.
Luckily for me, the other more famous Mike Scotts are mostly outside of IT, they are singers, baseball players, and producers of one of a kind wooden vessels from burrs of Welsh wood (I’m not joking).
I’m not even going to talk about Michael Scott, since the fictional character on the Office has dwarfed all of the others.
I guess you could always buy a Google bomb from John Chow.

A few weeks ago, I was talking with the CEO of a French company I was about to apply for who’s also one of my readers.
As I told him I was going to send him my resume, he stopped me with: no need for a resume, your blog is your resume.
I agree. If you have your personal blog, it is your face, your brand your image online.
I wonder what others would say about me – with their decisions based on my blog….Just a thought.

very true… some people are so unaware that they can easily be looked up online and their pictures of them doing drugs, hardcore or extreme views or their posts about going for drinks on their lunch hours will effect them… i know a few recruiters and hiring managers, the first thing they do after they browse a resume is google/myspace/facebook applicants, some companies even have a special department just to handle this… i try to be careful just not overly crazed, i feel that i dont do anything so “wrong” that if it was seen it would make someone not want to interview me or give me a chance…

Take good care of the image you portray with your blog. How many times have we seen someones MySpace or whatever blasted on the news when they get a few moments of fame. Don’t let become your skeleton in the closet.

Having an online presence is a must in today’s job search. heh.. I’m Mike “Deadguy” Scott, those are my “Deadguy Dementia” articles. Sorry if it screwed-up a job op for you. I dunno’, I used to get a lot of good publicity from those. Including folks asking if I’ve formally published any of my articles so they can reference it in their term papers on similar subjects.
I hate sharing this name with all the other Mike Scotts.. there’s like 37 in my county alone. Going to blockbuster without my card, or going to Amscot is a real treat.
I even share the same middle name with an author and two local guys. I keep hoping for bank screw-ups in my favor, but no luck so far. :)
I usually just write off any of my online stuff as being a different “Mike Scott” if I don’t want the attachment made.
You covered all the bases well! I was looking for a way to encourage kids, years away from needing a resume, to think in ways that will help them focus on the career they want and to present themselves in a fashion that will allow them to get the jobs they need for that career. Sounds like pretty grown up stuff for 4th grade to 8th graders at a career fair, but in my opinion it’s pretty late to start thinking in these terms as a junior or senior in high school.
