WinTabber: Create Tabs In Any Windows Program
Not only does this little Windows program create tabs for any software you have running, but you can choose specifically which programs are grouped together.
This means you can have one instance of WinTabber with your blogging, writing and research material, while another has all your graphic editing stuff. WinTabber is particularly useful to those who find XP’s taskbar grouping unbearable.

This program is still in beta, and (for me, at least - the screen vibrates almost constantly) seems to be extremely buggy. It’s a great concept, though, and I look forward to when it’s developed to usability. Thanks for the link!

This looks interesting but kind of a little clumsy and not enough of a benefit to use every day.
For me, with dual monitors, it’s just easier and looks better to use Ultramon so programs don’t group on one task bar. Ultramon actually has a whole other task bar on the 2nd monitor so applications on the opposite monitor aren’t all stacking up on the first taskbar. http://realtimesoft.com/ultramon/
When I use only 1 monitor, Dexpot is amazing. It’s free for private use and you can just have a whole virtual desktop for all your graphic stuff, one for music and IM, and any others you would like. Takes up very little ram and works every time. http://www.dexpot.de
I couldn’t survive without either of those programs.

DotCommie’s comment reminds me: I also use virtual desktops, via VirtualDimension (http://virt-dimension.sourceforge.net/). The project hasn’t been developed for a while, though (looks like Dexpot hasn’t been, either). I’ll give Dexpot a try, too.
As for window-grouping versus virtual desktops: I have to wonder which would use less resources. If they were even, then either could have benefits.

Or you can just turn off the grouping feature in the taskbar settings.

For those that dont group the windows (and even for those that do), I recommend Taskbar Shuffle (http://www.freewebs.com/nerdcave/taskbarshuffle.htm). The program is free and has worked near-flawlessly for me for several months.

Since wintabber’s new release .232 it seems to work pretty good. I’ve been using it with cygwin and putty for a while now without problems. Great app!
