Turn Windows XP into Mac OS X with FlyakiteOSX

desktop.jpg

This is not exactly new news, but you can change the look and feel of your Windows XP computer to be extremely similar to that of Mac OS X by installing the free FlyakiteOSX transformation pack. I am quite impressed with the transformation pack. If you’d like to give the pack a test drive, head over to the FlyakiteOSX homepage and you can try a slimmed down version of FlyakiteOSX right in your browser.

FlyakiteOSX is a transformation pack for [the] Windows user to transform the look and desktop theme of your Windows XP+ system to the look of Mac OS X.

You need to be very careful when installing these sorts of things. OS Transformation packs are usually designed to be installed and stay installed. They replace your standard dlls with the transformed ones. However when you try to uninstall them sometimes dlls go missing and programs start to break.

Sure Transformation Packs create system restore points but if your DLLs are missing and Windows won’t let you boot up into safe mode, that’s as good as no backup.

Just be aware about that and FlyakiteOSX can be a great fun install.

I am using the latest version of TrendMicro Officescan (7.3 / engine 8.320.1003/ DAT 21/03/07)

FlyakiteOSX is a great transformation pack. Other than this I can recommend the BricoPacks and TrucsenVrac ShellPacks.

I’ve had this installed for quite some time on my kids pc… I’ve had no issues at all.

I installed FlyAKite, and it is very shiny and pretty, but my system took a dive a bit. Log on and Log off and Shut Down began to take entirely too long. And programs just began to give errors that never did before.

I kept it for about 2 weeks, and my system had just got so finicky that I uninstalled it. I don’t really have any sort of technical explanations of why or what, but you can just tell.

Because it is constantly loading background apps and restoring DLL files that Windows changes back to default, things just get sketchy. But if you can look past the longer startup, and just the quirkiness it brings, by all means, install it. The Aqua effect is nice to see in Windows though.

I don’t have any alternate methods or suggestions to get WinXp to look like a Mac. I guess go for RocketDock if you want a dock.

      Hope this helps.

stardock products have been doing this for years, and works without a lot of problems, but watch for their products that replace boot.ini…those are tricky.

I need a flyakite version that lets me close the windows from the left, anybody got that kinda version??? E-mail me pls; geezlenator@gmail.com

The best thing to do is install an aqua theme for windows xp, the lock your taskbar and drag it to the top. The install Stardock ObjectDock, then set your background to the MAC OS X Background. It is so much easier, and doesn’t rape your system.

I just installed flyakiteOSX.. it looks great!! I have been a MAC user for the past 15 years.. and I just got a netbook today, to facilitate my constant travelling (in order to travel light)…and i miss my Macbook oready… But thanks to flyakiteOSX, i do not “miss home” so much. Not exactly like the real thing, but it’s good enough.

I have noticed a slight slow down in the system after the install, and it is quite noticible on the netbook, as it’s only a 1.66Ghz, and 2GB ram…other than that, so far so good! THUMBS UP!
