We’re already tagging everything on the web, how about letting that bit of organizational zen cross over to your desktop?
Tag2Find is a simple yet feature-heavy Windows tool that allows you to quickly tag individual or groups of files. Now instead of searching filenames and folders you can easily browse to intuitive tags.
Also features automatic tagging, tag clouds and integration with Windows Media Player.
Know of a similar program for Mac or PC?

Still in beta, but looking nice: http://www.nudgenudge.eu/punakea
I’ve been looking for something like this that will tag my files (like I do for photos and music) for a while now. Very useful. Thanks!

Yay! I was looking forward to WinFS in Longhorn for functionality like this. I’ll have to give it a try!
See “Tagging your files” section on the following webpage.

Yay ! I was looking for a way to organize my HUGE MP3 collection. This could be the solution.
The basic skin doens’t look so pretty, though. Anyone know if there are skins avaliable ?
Thanks for the link, Jon. I’m surprised that feature hasn’t been advertised more. That’s the kind of thing I’d think geeks would be all excited about.
[...] You can tag any file (or group of files) by dragging it onto the tag2find TagBox, then typing the tag(s) you want to add, or through the right-click context menu. In order to encourage you to tag new files as they’re created, tag2find can also monitor your new files and prompt you for tags. tag2find then provides a couple of ways to search through your tags, both of which seem to provide snappy results. Add to that automated tagging by filetypes, tag clouds, and Windows Media Player integration, and tag2find is a surprisingly powerful tool. tag2find [via lifehack.org] [...]
I tried Tag2Find a while back but just couldn’t get with the interface. It may have changed by now…
Lately I’ve been using TagAndFacet (http://www.skelia.com/products/product1) and it seems promising.
If you are using Outlook it adds tagging capabilities there as well.
I think improvements in desktop search have made filesystem tagging almost irrelevant. Linux users can get the best of both worlds with Tracker (my review here).
I have created a new Windows application that allows people to tag, search and preview their documents in an explorer-like folder environment. It approaches tagging in an easier way than tag2find. It is called UltraFolder. It’s a real time saver and a great way to stay organized. I thought you might want to check it out. It is at http://www.ultrafolder.com. Hope you like it.
