Poll: Do You Use Digg or Netscape?

Do You Use Digg or Netscape?

An interesting post came up on Performancing.com called Reasons Why I’m Liking Netscape Over Digg. The writer, Dee [correct me if I'm wrong], outlines why she is more interested in Netscape, and in turn, Netscape traffic, than Digg.

The main argument is that Digg is more narrow-minded than Netscape, in that Netscape has more categories and, apparently, a more diverse demographic, while Digg users are your 20-40 yr old techies.

So why is Digg such a draw for growing websites? Is the amount of traffic enough when compared to the diversity of audience in Netscape? Is Digg powered by a select few rather than the majority of readers? Does Netscape have the traffic to matter?

We’d like to know what your thoughts are and why you use one or the other. Netscape or Digg?

I use digg (some categories, like Apple, Programming, Tech News and stuff) and programming.reddit.com.
Never used Netscape, still reminds me of the ol’ days when we had NS4 to design for. ;-)

For techno buffs, digg is heaven. For others who want diversified matters, netscape is the only choice. Even Google is giving more importance to netscape over digg (except technogy issues).

      Netscape == irrelevant

I don’t use any of those. When I’m reading the news, I know exactly the type of news I’m looking for. As for tech stuff, I subscribe to specific blogs which will point me to any substantial articles that might interest me.

I’m always the one who doesn’t think like everyone else. I don’t much care what others think of any particular news items, so the whole social news thing is useless for me.

Newsvine is better than both IMO. The community is wonderful (you can actually have an intelligent debate about politics), you can write articles, and it even pays revenue!

I was a digg user for a long time. Then somehow it started looking more like the evening news than Cool Stuff To Read About, with people posting stories like “Man leaves infant in car for 8 hours, child dies” and “Teens put dog in bag and throw him in a river”.

Stories like that get dugg and make it to the front page consistently. If that’s what The Collective enjoys reading about, I no longer have any interest in being part of that group. Hence my Waste Of Time vote.

I don’t really understand the question. Does Netscape provide a Digg-like service now?

      David,
Yes, Netscape have provided a Digg-like news aggregator for the past year now.

      Have a look at Netscape.com

      How about good old Slashdot?

If you’re like me and quit Slashdot a few years ago because of editor problems, and Digg’s rising popularity, you might want to give it another look.

Digg’s comments have to me become unbearably immature, and reddit is more about left-wing political fanaticism than anything else.

So I went back to Slashdot… and was pleasantly surprised. Seems like their editor problems are gone, comments are really MUCH more insightful than Digg’s or Reddit’s, and the site just feels better.
