AutoRate: Turn iTunes into Pandora
One of iTunes’ least used features must be the star ratings. I’ve never found the urge to pull up the player while listening to make sure I’ve rated what I like or not.
A more practical solution would be one that’s similar to internet radio programs like Pandora and Last.fm – and particularly useful because Pandora shut up shop for anyone outside the States.
AutoRate is a simple iTunes plugin for Mac that automatically rates each track based on how many times it is listened to or skipped.
Couple this with the Play higher rated songs more often option for Party Shuffle, and your iTunes will learn what you like out of the vast array of pirated music on your hard drive.

While it may be a pain the caboose to pull up the iTunes player to rate a song while you’re working, a super quick way to rate something without interrupting yourself too much is by right-clicking, or control-clicking, the iTunes icon in the dock!
You’ll get a contextual menu whereby you can see what’s playing, pause, skip, stop, and best of all, rate the current track. I’m a Smart Playlist fiend myself, and rating your songs is the first step to really harnessing the magical power of Smart Playlists.
I’ve posted a little bit about it on my blog here:

Even better solution (on Windows): http://itunescontrol.com/
It allows you to use hotkeys to rate songs as you hear them. (Plus to control just about any other feature of iTunes.) Great little add-on.
