Now is the time of year where things can get pretty hectic — and likely already are. Today’s offering in Lifehack’s 12 Days of Giveaways is one that can serve to slow you down when you’re going to need it the most. It’s a great book by Patrick Rhone (Minimal Mac, the Enough podcast) called Keeping It Straight: You, Me & Everything Else, and it’s one of the best books I’ve read in a long time.
But before we get to that, let’s find out who won yesterday’s giveaway.
Our 8th giveaway was courtesy of AgileBits, and one lucky Lifehack reader had the chance to win 100% off a single order up to $50 from their online store. Since 1Password is the company’s most popular product, we asked the following question:
“What are the first 3 online accounts you would secure with 1Password and why?”
And the winning entry was left by goeasgles21, who was really specific when they said:
“1. iTunes – to finally thwart my teenaged daughter/hacker who likes to go on shopping sprees; 2. Amazon, to which I send a goodly portion of my income every year; and 3. My bank, so that what remains of my income stays where I put it.”
Definitely smart uses for 1Password. Congratulations!
Today’s giveaway
Today, Patrick Rhone has offered different versions of Keeping it Straight to three lucky Lifehack.org readers. What is the book all about? I’ll let the book’s website describe it, as it does it best:
Keeping It Straight is Patrick Rhone’s very personal meditation on his own life and experiences. His clear insights identify the jumble and distractions of life today and offer simple and useful advice on how to discover and focus on what really matters. This collection of short essays is filled with clear, direct, and useful observations on productivity, life, and living.
Here’s what’s up for grabs, courtesy of the book’s author, Patrick Rhone:
1 ebook edition
1 paperback edition
1 signed hardcover edition
If you need to get some perspective into what you’re doing, how you’re doing it and — most importantly — why you’re doing it, then you absolutely must pick up Keeping It Straight. It is truly a holistic reading experience. I can’t wait to read his next book, Enough, comes out.

One thing I plan to keep straight in the coming year? One thing is my new business. That means making decisions with a long-term mindset and remembering where I want to be by this time next year.
One thing I want to keep straight in the new year are my digital media files. I often feel overrun by managing the individual files, metadata, cover art, etc. As much as I love digital media, it really was easier before – you just had to put the book or CD or DVD on the bookshelf and you’d be done!
Hopefully, Patrick has some good suggestions about sensible defaults for this type of stuff in the book. Thanks!
Health/weight are getting kept straight this next year.
This is the year for figuring out my dissertation. Gotta get it straight!!
My garage is a disorganized mess. I have lost too many things out there. I need to organize that space and keep it organized before I lose more things, including my mind. Next on the list is my basement. That is also too disorganized.
“What is one thing you are going “keep straight” in your life in the coming year?”
I had enough of consumption of information over the past 8 years. In 2012 I will focus on producing 80% of the time and consuming 20% of the time. Out of these 20% I ill dedicate 80% to books and 20% to online reading.
“What is one thing you are going “keep straight” in your life in the coming year?”My life.
I’m keeping things straight by ruthlessly divesting myself of things and people which do not bring me joy in their use, association, or possession. (Although I’m still hangin’ with my second cousin … Ruth.)
This year I’ll keep up my straightedge life. It’s been hugely beneficial for my self-growth to deal with issues rather than chemically changing my mood.
Next year I am going to finally straighten out my morning (and evening) routine.
As a student this year, and those that preceded it, have been filled with long coding and blog reading nights and stressful mornings having me stumbling out of my room and rushing to get the train (and often missing it).
This left me with no time to mentally prepare myself for the day, constant tiredness and all around stress.
My new year’s resolution is to go to bed much earlier and get up early enough every morning to have time to go for an hour’s walk after I get up and still have enough time to prepare for college.
Walking is like meditation for me. A morning walk will allow me to clear my head and focus on what I am going to do *today* and go to college with a smile on my face. :)

In the new year I am going “keep straight” myself. Being newly
diagnosed with pre-diabetes I need to change my lifestyle in the areas
of weight, food and stress (basically cutting down all three). 2012 will
be the “ME” year.

I’m going to keep my humour straight: too often do I sit by and watch as people make racist jokes, use the word “gay” or “retarded” or “good lord”. I’m none of these things but to sit and laugh with them seems to make it ok, and so my aim throughout the year is to make sure that I don’t laugh or pretend it’s ok.
I am going to keep my collage grades straight so that I can get a spot as an exchange student, pursuing one of my goals of studying abroad.
Next year it’s time to clear up some stuff that are not neccessary anymore.
Some of them are parts of my kinda previous life. There are some i want to keep, the others are completely useless for me by now.
I’ll just want to find a good balance and also just find how much is enough. Now i find it too much.
This book could give me some very good ideas!

This year and forever in the future I am going to keep my lifestyle (eating, sleeping and exercise) habits straight for my family.
I’m going to keep my emotions straight. Sure, emotions fluctuate but sometimes they can make me go crazy — especially during the holidays!
I will do my best at keeping my back straight – a hunchback isn’t viewed attractive by anyone!
My weight. I’m tired of trying to eat myself to death.
I will try to have a closer walk with my Lord Jesus by reading my Bible on a daily basis and by ministering to others’ needs more often.
