Nice infographic. It is clear that people don’t like having meetings. Is the solution less meetings or better meetings? Meetings are a form of communication and like what we have learned about communication from the likes of Facebook, Twitter, and blogging for that matter, is that communication is better when a bit of structure is applied to it. The brillance of Twitter is limiting the input to 140 characters. It forces efficient communication.
Did you happen to ask about teleconferences in the survey? I would bet the response would be even worse. I have been running some large collaborative consortium projects (up to 40 partners) and they all at first resist the idea of teleconferences. However, after a bit of time working with well organized and structured teleconferences they all want more.
To address the issue of too many meetings, the first step of structuring is defining the objectives and purpose of the meeting or teleconference. Then it makes it easier to apply the advice of Derek Sivers “Its either Hell YEAH or no.” Then it becomes not less meetings, but less pointless meetings.
