When Less Pay Is Good

When Less Pay Is Good

We’ve talked about how negotiation can get you higher pay in the workforce, but what if taking a pay-cut or a job that earns you less is better for your career or personal life?

This article covers a few scenarios where less pay is better. One reason, which you’ll find more and more young workers accepting, is flexibility. The most common trade-off to more income would be more freedom.

“Candidates have stepped back dramatically in pay to get off the road,” said Kathryn Ullrich, an executive recruiter in Silicon Valley. Others are simply looking for more flexible hours, such as the ability to leave work to attend a child’s soccer game.

Taking less to get more …

I quit a job 3 years ago that was turning me into (or exposing my tendencies to become) a workaholic: 18 hour days, 4+ years without vacation, working evenings, weekends, holidays, being on-call 24/7. So I took that opportunity to be home with our newborn son, figuring I’d do that for 6-12 months. When I went to get back into the field I discovered that most employers found this to be somewhat odd and disturbing … I’m holding out for something where I don’t have to work a ton of hours, where I have very clear responsibilities and I can leave work at work, where it belongs.

So far, it looks like I’ll have to take less than or maybe close to the salary I was earning 3 years ago, and lose some ‘position’ … but the truth is I want less, so I can really have more: More time with family, more time to reflect, recharge, do the things I want to do before time catches up with me and everything fades to black. :D

I left my job so I can continue my school, but I have small ebay business that does not take much of my time. Now I have more time for school & family.
