Granted, like most cooking techniques, this guide is no substitute for experience and, as viewers on Reddit pointed out, those who have particularly tough hands from physical labor absolutely cannot benefit from this chart and the results will also vary by thickness and cut of steak.

That being said, for those of us who have relatively average level of hand muscle and softness, this is a good starting point for cooking red meat if you don’t have much experience cooking a steak or a meat thermometer to give you an accurate reading. Of course, there is no substitute a good meat thermometer that can give you a much more accurate reading of the readiness of your steak.
