Are you going away on a short weekend trip? Looking to keep your bag small, tidy and manageable? Learn how to pack your bag the right way for your next weekend excursion with these quick tips.
Make a packing list.
Start things off by making a list of all the items you’ll need to pack for your trip. Take into consideration the local weather for the area to which you are traveling, as well as the different events, functions and activities you will be attending over the weekend. By making a list, you might be able to cut out a few non-essentials before you even start packing your bag. Plus, you’ll have an easy way to check and make sure you’ve repacked your belongings at the end of the trip.
Minimize clothing basics.
Remember, you don’t have to pack everything you own–just enough clothing to get you through the weekend! Only pack clothes you will truly and honestly wear over the weekend, not what you think you’ll wear. Keep your bag slim by choosing clothing with solid colors instead of prints or patterns to maximize your outfit combinations. You can also save space by packing thinner and lighter items instead of bulky items. In most cases you’ll probably only need one coat or jacket for when the weather gets chilly, so choose wisely.
Extra undergarments are great to have on hand for any trip, especially since they take up far less space than other clothing. For a weekend trip, you might want to start with at least two changes of undergarments and consider packing an additional one or two changes in case you need them. Don’t forget to pack commonly overlooked items such as pajamas and extra pairs of socks!
Pack all-purpose shoes.
Choose a pair of shoes that are practical, sturdy and neutral in color. You’ll want to be able to comfortably wear your shoes for extended periods of time and be able to match your shoes to different outfits. Your shoes could be anything from a pair of sneakers, to lace-up walking shoes, to English style riding boots. If you do want to have two pairs of shoes on hand, wear the heaviest or larger pair of shoes and pack the other pair in your bag.
Keep your toiletries tiny.
Take a trip down the travel or trial section of your local supermarket or drug store for smaller versions of your favorite toiletries. If you’re on a budget, you can check to see if you have any travel or trial products at home or decant items such as such as shampoo and conditioner into smaller plastic containers. Aim to slim down these starter products: soap, body wash, face wash, shampoo, conditioner, hair spray or hair product, deodorant, lotion, moisturizer and shaving cream. To save even more space in your bag, you might want to invest in travel-size grooming products such as a travel toothbrush, floss, comb and brush.
