DIY Air Conditioner

The Homebrew AC by Geoff Milburn is a little bit of DIY genius for those battling a poor and hot summer. Some tubing, a fan and a garbage can is all it takes. Geoff’s work isn’t all that new anymore, but it’s worth the mention again this summer.

Another thing that you could do is fill a large bowl with water, ice and salt. Put it in front of the fan for cool air.

One thing to keep in mind — Humidity. I saw this kind of thing fairly frequently in California, where they were referred to as “swamp coolers.” A warehouse I worked in used one, and it worked great. Now I live in the southeast (80-90% humidity) and I am fairly sure this will not work here.

In my old apartment last winter I did the same thing with my old car radiator, some tubing going to the bathtub faucet and back to the drain, and 2 large window fans. Hot water was free (included in rent), but the electric baseboard heaters were very pricey to run. This way I got a my heat via a homemade heat pump and I was careful not to use too much water in the process.
