If I asked you what words come to mind when you think of your home, what would you say? Would you tell me that it brings you peace every time you walk in the front door? Would you say that the items in your home inspire you and bring you joy every time you look at them? Would you describe your household as organized and calm? A peaceful, calm household that is organized and filled with happiness and laughter is the type of home anyone would love to say they own. It is also the best type of home in which to raise a family. So, how do we ensure that we can describe our homes this way? It’s actually easier than you think, but you must take the first step.
Feng Shui is an ancient art and science of creating balance and harmony in our lives by the effective management of our environment; the benefits can be felt almost immediately. Applying feng shui principles to your home is the best way to make quick, effective changes to the dynamics of your family.
Read the following descriptions and note how you feel as you read each one.
House Number One:
- Unkept lawn with weeds, no flowers
- Front entry with shoes strewn around
- Kitchen with dirty dishes in the sink and crumbs on the counter. Stack of unopened mail and flyers piled high on the counter
- Living room is filled with toys, some lying on the floor, some piled high in the corner of the room.
- Bedroom has mismatched furniture, clothes on the floor or on a chair. Books and magazines stuffed under the bed, bed linen that is old and faded, dresser tops cluttered with gadgets, makeup, jewellery
House Number Two:
- Tidy green lawn with blue and white hydrangeas lining the house. Favourite potted plants on either side of the front door.
- Front entry is clear with shoes neatly placed on a rack and coat hooks for the coats.
- Kitchen is clean, bright and the counter tops are sparkling. Only a few daily used items are displayed and three fresh green plants or herbs rest on the window sill.
- Living Room is tidy and has labelled organizer baskets and tubs for the children’s toys. Special candle sticks bought on a wonderful holiday are displayed on the mantle and two dark green plants sit in different corners of the room
- Bedroom has neutral calming colours with splashes of a favourite decorative colour. Current books and magazines are stored in the matching bedside tables and the fresh, crisp bed linen is made up nicely. The only items on the dresser are a photo of you and your partner, a fresh bouquet of flowers and a jewellery box that holds the items you wear often.
Now, just by reading those two descriptions I’m sure you could feel how different it would be to live in each home. House number two gives a feeling of calm, joy, and beauty whereas house number one gives a feeling of chaos, depression and stagnancy.
The basic principle behind feng shui is that our environment is a reflection of our lives, either good or bad, because we are connected with them. They are the external representation of who we are. Therefore, if we change or move something in our home we will experience a corresponding change or shift in our life. In essence people can use feng shui to get more of what they want and less of what they don’t want. So, if for 2010 we want to feel less-stressed, to have more balance in our lives and to experience joy and happiness on a regular basis with our children, then we first need to set up the environment for that to take place.
Although I highly suggest you hire a feng shui expert to thoroughly survey your home and offer suggestions as to what needs changing, here is something feng-shui expert, Davina MacKail, suggests you can do right away to set the tone for your family life in 2010 – clear your clutter.
Davina says, “Everything you own is energetically attached to you. Things you love are like golden threads. Conversely, clutter is like dragging around a ball and chain.
“Look at your possessions with fresh eyes and ask yourself if each object reflects you and the home you want. If not, it is time to let them go. By removing the old, you create more space for the new – what you truly DO want.
“If you weed a garden and just leave it the weeds return stronger than before. But, if you weed a garden and then plant it with gorgeous plants and flowers the weeds have no room to return. Exactly the same approach should be taken with clutter. Make sure you know what you want to fill your newly created space with, be it more joy or more balance. This way you will stop the clutter from returning.”
Good questions to ask yourself when tackling clutter are:
- Do I really love this object?
- Does it enhance my life?
- Do I use it?
- Is it time to let it go?
Just as it is necessary to build walls and lay floors and a roof to build a house, so is it necessary to prepare your home, set the stage if you will, to build the type of family life you truly want. So, clear the clutter, create the feeling you want in your house using feng shui principles, and then allow stress-free parenting to begin flowing in.

For uncluttering your life, its always good to ask yourself those questions, whether this object helps me in my life, career, etc. Then it is time to organize and keep the object or get rid of it. You would be amazed at the number of things we all possess that we dont use anyways. We can freecycle them and give them away to the needy people. Kelly Sutton has started ‘cult of less’ where he has catalogued every one of his possessions and listed them as keep or sale on the internet. I forgot the link, if you google for it you will find it.
I want to report a glitch. For this article, along with Ten Things Children Really Want From Their Parents and one about New Year’s Resolutions that is around that age, no picture shows in the avatar slot or on the page, and the only words on the page are an introductory paragraph. The entire article can be viewed in the Comments page, however. Also, is there a way to report a glitch officially?
Sav: The lack of an avatar on the front page is a known issue, and we’re trying to address that. I’m not sure what you mean by “the only words on the page are an introductory paragraph” — that’s all that’s supposed to be on the homepage. You can report a glitch or contact us for any other reason using the Contact page at http://www.lifehack.org/contact — that link will be re-added to the menu at the top of the page asap.
Feng Shui is a thoroughly debunked practice. There’s nothing to it. I believe decluttering is helpful but to recommend hiring a so-called expert (numerous Feng Shui “experts” do not even agree with one another destroying the notion that there’s any science to this), runs counter to Lifehack’s normally helpful articles on taking control of your own life. It also contradicts any good financial advice that has ever been on this site.
Decluttering your home, taking care of your possessions, and cultivating your environment to support serenity and happiness are worthwhile endeavors.
Hiring an expert to address the flow of positive and negative energy in your house seems pretty foolish though.
Spend your time and money throwing out the crap in your house, buy a few quality pieces of furniture, and be your own feng shui “expert.”
It is very foolish to hire a “Feng Shui” specialist. Nightline and even Penn and Teller have exposed many of them as true con artists. There is no science in Feng Shui. Simply de-clutter your home. you will save a lot of money (some Feng Shui specialists charge upwards of $200.00 an hour)
If you really feel the need to spend money, hire an interior designer or decorator. you will end up with the same result. they will tell you to get rid of 1.2 of the stuff you have in the room and re-arrange everything.
I think that even if you don’t follow Feng Shui, you can have a balanced life. It’s all about looking into your soul and finding out the things that truly make you happy. The balance and prosperity comes with the joy and freedom you get from the physical world.
Recently I have massively feng shui’d (is that a phrase?) my bedroom and it looks so Spartan and minimal now. It’s great. There is no more clutter, I’ve made some money selling things and everything is only out when it needs to be. Highly recommended to anyone.
I think Feng Shui is a good principle but like many other things in life the people who push to the extremes run the risk of being lambasted.
The principle is definitely good though. I can tangibly feel myself relax and grow happier when the house and kitchen especially are tidy. I am also very aware of things that don’t work properly (like a sticky door) niggling me.
As for consultants, it can be useful to bring someone in to help you achieve what you know how (and ought) to do. For example, almost everyone knows how to get fit but personal trainers are seen as being worthwhile investments to many people.
Agree with Michael about the feng shui superstition – but see also Daniel Miller’s book “The Comfort of Things” (Polity, 2008) for an alternative view of the value of “things” to our own identity and to our relationships. Let’s display Aunty Mabel’s hideous vase (along with Dustin’s recommended underwear repair kit) with pride and love – and not just when they’re coming to tea!
I wonder about the actual practical value of Feng Shui vs. “getting off the couch and cleaning up”. The question is:
How much more calming and balance value can a total Feng Shui makeover have over “just cleaning up”? Specifially in the example of the two homes.
If you “just” clean up, your home is neat and organized. Do mismatching colors matter? What if their mismatching is historical? You may have a decidedly un-fengshui lamp, an old fridge, weird couch cushions, but if they all represent a time of your life – like they are presents, they are from your last apartment, they are the first thing you bought etc – would you really want to switch them? You have your own plants that you care for – so what if they have spiky leaves (which is a threatening shape), they are yours.
Would you really want someone else to reorganize stuff for you? You’d probably end up with a sterile house with burning candles and fresh flowers like they always show in those home makeovers on TV. Really? How long will that last? How long until you find it extremely unpractical that you have to hide your electonic device chargers and can’t leave them out so you can just plug your stuff in? How long until you realize the minimal box of jewelry is making you wear just that and your other pieces are hidden? Do you think your kitchen will always be sparkling? Kitchens are not sparkling for most of the time, they are messy, because they produce messy things. Will you really be compelled to straighten your bedsheets every morning instead of just having the freedom to leave them and go to work?
Of course not. And if you have children, bye-bye feng shui. Really, feng shui is for a different culture, one that doesn’t have so many things, one that doesn’t have so much space and that is more disciplined. There, it makes sense, but in a typical Western environment, I just can’t see it working in the long run. That’s why if a friend of mine was into feng shui, it was always but a “phase”. No one I know has ever really converted their homes and actually stuck with it from that day on, especially when they got children. It’s a cool thing young people do for a while. So I think that basic unclutter advice is more practical and with more longterm potential than trying to push concepts from a different culture.
Once again, I love the conversation that this article has started.
I want to clarify a few things:
1) Feng Shui is not just about tidying up – that’s the simpliest thing you can do to begin changing the way you feel in your home.
2) Feng Shui does not say you need to have matching pillows, just a flowing colour scheme is all that is required.
3) Sometimes others can see things in our homes (therefore our lives) that we cannot see. My husband and I consider ourselves to be quite tidy but there were areas of small clutter in our home that centered around certain themes (issues). It was extremely eye-opening, but yes, I agree with those of you who are concerned about money – just clearing the clutter and not getting stressed about having everything fit feng shui perfectly is a fine idea to start with.
Best Wishes,
Erin
So, are we saying here that we will feel better if we have less stuff?
“He who has the most toys wins” and “Keeping up with the neighbors” seems to destroy Feng Shui.
I’m all for de-cluttering, but Feng Shui strikes me as a lot of superstitious nonsense – like certain colors being lucky, bringing prosperity, etc. It also dictates placement of furniture – which I think should vary with each individual. For example, I am most comfortable with furnishings that face toward the windows. My mother-in-law, who is very private, is happiest with her sofa set in front of the windows, facing into the room. Different strokes…
“He who dies with the most toys, still dies.”

Feng Shui is NOT A SCIENCE. You can hire 5 different Feng Shui “experts” to examine your home and make suggestions and they will all be different. Penn and Teller did an episode of Bullshit! on it. Verily, feng shui is at the same level as reading tea leaves or turtle shells.

Fung-Shui is NOT a science. Don’t waste your money on a so called “expert”. Like one of the commenters said, those experts don’t even agree with each other. Do by all means declutter, but don’t fool yourself into thinking there’s some science behind Feng-Shui.

great introduction. I have always wanted to know more about how to use Fung Shui to create a more relaxing environment, especially in my front room which always seems to have a tense feeling to the room.
Dump the junk, clutter, stress and chaos in your personal space–You can still be a slacker, keep your personality and your true self without all of the extraneous, needless and costly stuff and BS in your home life. Try it at work, too.

I have found that uncluttering my life makes it easier to think and work.
I wish my home was clutter free and peaceful..Time to act! ;)

Harmonizing colors, placement of furniture, etc. certainly DO work. They can have a huge influence on your mood. Now them not agreeing is the same thing as two designers not agreeing. It doesn’t make one or the other right, they have a difference of opinion. Each person may have a different reaction to a designers work. However, paying anyone 200$ to tell you reduce clutter and keep your space clean is really idiotic.
My wife practices feng-shui on some areas of our house. Mostly on potted plants placement. I don’t know if it works though. I hope it does. “,)
