Beginner’s guide to running a 5K
It may be a little early in the year to be talking about jogging, but for those of us who made getting fit a New Year’s and resolution, there is a great training plan at Cool Running that takes you from being a couch potato (no running experience) to completing a 5K race. The training plan is nine weeks long and includes three workouts per week. The workouts are a combination of walking and running so you won’t need a gym membership to complete this program.
Too many people have been turned off of running simply by trying to start off too fast. Their bodies rebel, and they wind up miserable, wondering why anyone would possibly want to do this to themselves.
You should ease into your running program gradually. In fact, the beginners’ program we outline here is less of a running regimen than a walking and jogging program. The idea is to transform you from couch potato to runner, getting you running three miles (or 5K) on a regular basis in just two months.

Print off the running plan, but don’t use Coolrunning for your running log. Runningahead.com has a way cooler running log with Google maps that allow you to sketch out your running routes, user fora, user groups, and a ton of other neat features. And the administrator actually pays attention to the site and is active in the fora.
I’m a huge fan of runningahead.com, but I don’t want to dis coolrunning.com too much. I still go to them for articles and training plans. They’ve got good content. I just really prefer RA’s logging software.
