It’s the holiday season, which means those New Years resolutions are coming up fast. For those of you who are considering exercising more this upcoming year, here is a workout specially designed for the geek in you.
The Problem with Traditional Workouts
The number one problem with most workout plans for the life hacker is that they are boring. You go to the gym, lift some weights, run on the treadmill, and go home. Maybe next time you’ll run a little faster or lift a little more weight, but you’re pretty much going to do the same thing over and over. What’s the fun in that?
As a life hacker, you are creative and adventurous in everything you do, including your exercise. You should be constantly challenged both physically and mentally. Traditional workouts push you physically, while your mind remains idle. No wonder you reject them.
How to Hack Your Workout
Remember that hackers discover unconventional methods to push the boundaries of both themselves and their environment. A great tool that I’ve been using in my workouts is the aerobics step platforms. It’s like playing with giant sized legos, where I can build my own workout scenarios to explore.
Here are a couple methods that I already use:
- Hopping the Hurdles: This one is based off a gymnastics exercise I saw and is the one pictured above. I place a series of platforms at different lengths and heights and consecutively jump over them. It’s pretty fun because after the first jump, your feet act as springs, so it’s almost like being on a pogo stick. I kind of feel like Mario as I go through my level.
- The Parkour Track: The second method I use is laying out the long platforms on the floor in an oval shape and usually have one or two high obstacles that I need to either jump or climb over. I run atop the platforms, which means I need to be conscious of where I put my feet, when I speed up to jump, and even the speed taking corners (I’ve fallen over a few times as the platform slid out from going too fast).
The benefit of using these aerobics platforms is that it easily enables you to dynamically adjust the difficulty of the workout, according to your own beliefs about your abilities. It also provides great variability between workouts, so that your body is physically challenged, your cognitive awareness of your environment is enhanced, your creativity is expressed, and you get to have fun while everyone else is bored. ;)
Remember, these are only a couple methods of the vast possibilities. Unleash your creative side and see how else you can use them to be challenged.

I’m a creative person. And as of late, I’ve lost my anger and my hate for everything and everyone. I quit Capoeira because it was too complicated for me. I took up Yoga and Pilates because it suited the lifestyle I wanted for myself: calm, peaceful, uncompetitive.

Try crossfit (crossfit.com). As a nerd who did not liked exercise when I was young, I am now totally hooked. It promotes all-around fitness with emphasis on proper technique. Really intense at first, but the coaches will adapt your workout according to your intensity, and progress comes amazingly fast. Each workout is different, so it never gets boring and you always learn new moves. Very nerdy!
“You go to the gym, lift some weights, run on the treadmill, and go home. Maybe next time you’ll run a little faster or lift a little more weight, but you’re pretty much going to do the same thing over and over. What’s the fun in that?”
It’s not always fun but it works and if you have a 24hr gym it’s convenient. I find motivation in that I’m getting in better shape every time. I use it as a time to listen to new music, catch a little trash or sports on TV etc. or sometimes just zone out and focus on the workout.
One thing I forgot to add is I geek-out by tracking my workouts online, which is very good motivational tool when you look back at what you did for the month..
This was great….
Nice workout. it may not be as heavy as a workout in the gym but I guess, it can work just as well. :D
I just love a quiet walk or jog this time of year. In warmer weather I love cycling and hiking. Sometimes I even cruise arround on a push scooter. Dut da dut dah dah dah….dut da dut da dah dah. My kids think that’s uber-nerdy!
Start small and get bigger. It’s what always seems to work. Start with just 5 minute exercise a day. Everyone can spare 5 minutes. When you’ve done that for a month you have installed the habit and can increase.
I have a collection of workout videos that I pick up for a dollar at yard sales. I recently transfered them to DVDs. This way, I can do a variety of programs at home without the expense of a gym.
I second the recommendation for CrossFit. The intensity and the personal challenge have helped boost both my fitness and my attitude to the rest of life. They’re sorta open source too… The Workout Of the Day is posted on the crossfit site, so you can participate on your own.
Crossfit is cool. Remember that the point is to get you 80% ready to do any other physical activity. So it’s good to have something to put that training to use. :)
the great thing about getting healthy at first is that it takes so little to get a huge improvement. 15 mins in the gym, or even 10 mins swimming, will completely knacker you out – and you’ll feel great. Its when youre healthy already that pushing on is difficult – when its 10K+ every time you go for a run, it takes so much time that you really need to start planning your life around it.
Thanks for the tips. I’m definitely going to try and exercise more this upcoming year, although it’s not easy when you sit in front of a computer 18 hours a day :(
30 pushups
50 squats
10 pullups
20 v-ups
rest 2 min
50 burpees on time (you can split like 20/15/10/5)
You can do a lot with your bodyweight!
breath your lungs out…cool down…dont stretch too much. stretching should be done seperately as it damages muscle fibres. shower hot/cold/hot/cold/hot/cold for blood circulation. eat right.

Actually I thought that real geeks dont do jog or just walk in the park but rather do some intellectual workouts like playing games which train their brains and help to get smarter or at least pretend to do so. But well, maybe I was wrong :-)
Many Thanks for sharing this!
This is exactly why I love my kettlebell training! I get so bored doing endless amounts of mindless reps at a gym. Kettlebells make you concentrate during the entire training session. They will also give you the most effective workout in the shortest amount of time.
By writing down my weight target and setting a specific date I have managed to lose 4 kilos in 3 weeks. I found by using tools like a weight loss calculator http://weightnolonger.com/blog/weight-loss-calculator/
That it is much easier to stick to your plan. I am enjoying my workouts more as a result of the clear goals I have set.
The intensity & the personal challenge have helped boost both my fitness & my attitude to the remainder of life. They are sorta open source too.
