The Biggest Myths of the Workplace
The Brazen Careerist, Penelope Trunk, wrote of 9 myths associated with the common workplace. Her most interesting concept, that she’s written about before, is the myth that if you enjoy your job your life is improved so much.
I happen to think there is a lot of truth in that myth, however, Penolope’s argument that there is more importance in a positive attitude towards any work and good relationships in your personal life.
The correlation between your happiness and your job is overrated. The most important factors, by far, are your optimism levels and your personal relationships. If you are a pessimist, a great job can’t overcome that. (Think of the jerks at the top.) And if you have great friends and family, you can probably be happy even if you hate your job (imagine a garbage collector who’s in love).

A simple explanation for why you two (if Mr. Ho wrote this article) comes from gender studies. According to these ideas, coming from self-reporting responses to research questions, is that women value relationships as providing meaning to their lives- whereas men find meaning in their work.
Yes, this is a sexist idea. I admit to believing in gender differences. Doesn’t mean a bigot can convince me to discriminate by the wrong criteria.
