Study Successfully
Brad (who I’ll eventually podcast with) has a great post on his site about studying. He’s going for his tech re-certifications and his wife is back in school, so studying’s on the brain. He cooks up a recipe for no-fail cards:
- Each card should have 1 question and 1 answer.
- When stuck on a tricky topic, make a flash card.
- Keep your flashcards in your pocket or purse all the time.
- Review each flashcard in your pack 3 times a day.
- Consider the information learned only after you can answer the question on a good night’s sleep.
Sometimes, it’s the old school tricks with a new face that get you home. Check this out for yourself, because you’re no doubt a lifelong learner, right? After all, you’re hacking life.

There is an excellent free flashcard program (for Macs only) called Genius. It allows you to create text flashcards and then uses an adjustable algorithm to start with just two and gradually add the whole pack of cards, with feedback on which you are getting right. It has been a lifesaver for me in medical school, with lots of odd words that I just need to memorize.

Hmmm… I find the post intriguing but I’ve a different opinion. Instead of using flashcards, I strongly recommend the use of mindmaps.
Mindmaps is a type of wholebrain notes that works much more effecient that flash cards.
Furthermore, mindmaps allow you to understand materials much faster since it focus on keywords.
If you’re wondering what’s the point I’m driving, keywords are the words that make the difference when it comes to reading and understanding.
Words such as the, a, an, do NOT aid in understanding. Keywords do. If you’ve always wanted to read faster, study smarter, I strongly recommend that you change your study strategy, provided that you have one in the first place.
Here’s a resource you can leverage on:

I think flash cards is a very old technique which is kinda bored for the students nowadays.
One of the great reasons is because it’s so troublesome. And people are just lazy nowadays.
My opinion is mindmap is a better choice, just like what Joel said. One reason is because it’s a lazy method, u summarize the whole idea into ur own words or pictures and just jote it down.
Thanks Joel for the great site. http://www.secretsofstudying.com
