I’ve done a lot of blog surfing lately, in search of new (best) blogs. What I found often, however, was that there are things people could do to improve the relationship and interaction value of their blogs, which would in turn build a better bridge between blogs and their readers.
- Display Contact Info Prominently- Put the author’s name right up there easy to read, and add a photo, an email written out to avoid spiders ( chris at lifehack dot org instead of actually clickable), and even a phone number, if you want people to reach you. Add your IM username, and other contact info. If it’s a multi-author blog, display an “About the Authors” link prominently.
- Fix Comments- I outright LOATHE blogs that don’t permit comments. It’s the opposite of a blog. As Shel Israel said the day before yesterday (if not further back), “It has been the dialog vs. the monologue.” So, make it fairly easy to let people communicate. That means disabling the “users must register to comment” type features. It means even considering killing the “capcha” features, those annoying “write what you see here” things. I still agree with whoever said all capcha should be corporate logos or animal pictures or whatever.
- Format Your Text- Take the extra time to write “pretty” posts, such as it were. Make it so that people can read what you’re typing, and do your best to keep the tone communicative, and not too dense. Translation: big fat paragraphs of dense text usually don’t make for “friendly” blog reading. (Look at David Byrne’s journal. Great stuff, but soooooooo long.) And get friendly with things like bulleted lists, shorter and longer paragraphs, use of bold, etc. But not too much. It’s a condiment.
- Use Tagging- The best thing about using Technorati tags and other tagging features is that it helps you AND others. As a blogger, it gets you more traffic from people interested in the words you’ve selected as tags for your post. As a reader, it helps you determine quickly if something is relevant to your interests.
- Link, Link, Link- When you talk about 43 Folders, give them a link. When you write about a hilarious video on New Year’s Resolutions, share the direct link. This has two effects: one is that it makes it more useful to your readers. Two, it shows Google that you’re alive and sharing information back and forth (which benefits you *and* the linkee). BONUS: it’s good karma, and people feel warm and fuzzy when they see you’ve linked to them.
- Stay Vibrant- There’s always a way to blog about what matters to you. If your blog features a lot about pens and Moleskine hacks and the like, there are plenty of ways to keep it creative. Just keep thinking about your “audience,” and bring them information that matters.
It’s what Leon and the writers of Lifehack do here (best as we can). We work hard to keep the blog vibrant, varied, and unique, and we try to show different perspectives on what we’ve got on our minds that might be useful to you.
What have I missed?

Much of what you have suggested I have recently implements but you did raise one I hadn’t considered (contact info)but will fix up right away … thanks
Regarding opening up of contacts… tried that. Got attacked by the spam bots on a regular basis. When the signal to noise ratio drops so low, any pretense at bidirectional communication is irrelevant.
As for comment spam, I’ve found that Akismet combined with Bad Behavior 2 block 99.999% of all comment spam without the need for a capcha.

This has two effects: one is that it makes it more useful to your readers. Two, it shows Google that you’re alive and sharing information back and forth (which benefits you *and* the linkee). I’d recommend separating trackbacks from actual comments.
It is difficult for readers to locate real comments among trackback pings which look like real comment text but are mostly just resyndications/summaries (often non-human automated summaries produced by blogging tools) of what the reader has already read – a real turn-off. They aren’t high quality comments.
Turn off trackbacks or help the reader by giving real comments a separate space.
Don’t treat your community’s comment space as a garbage can for back-links.
Interesting tips, but I found it amusing that your ‘contact us’ page is hardly prominent – your no.1 rule.
Interesting tips, but I found it amusing that your ‘contact us’ page is hardly prominent – your no.1 rule. Oh, and you use Captcha – your no.2 rule.
Nice list! Here are a few more tips I have:
Use sidebar widgets judiciously. Don’t put so much in your sidebar that readers get a headache trying to find the real information. What works on my blog may not be appropriate for yours.
White space – and plenty of it. It makes your blog easier to read.
Uses “pages” to put some of that sidebar info into. Example: about page, top posts page, etc.
Tagging is very useful. However, using Technorati tags benefits Technorati more so than a blogger or blog readers. For that reason, I’ve created TagBuildr which builds tags adhering to the rel-tag microformat. These tags will be picked up by blog search engines like Technorati but instead of building up backlinks for Technorati, I’ll keep the links on my site. The tag links also go to a TagSummary page which lists resources for Flickr, del.icio.us, and Squidoo, as well as Technorati.
Until someone finds a sure fire way to stop comment spam no on is going to open up comments.
Such a helpful shortlist of tips. Reminders a newcomer needs to hear (many, many, times) Thank you.

You are way off on the captcha…if you have a moderately trafficked blog even, you can get pounded with spam (as well as any comment contributors who have subscribed to the post). I mean, your post already has a porn link at the very top of the comments (at the moment)…how does this improve the level of conversation. Yes, it is a nuisance, but I like it better even than comment moderation which causes very stilted conversations. I went as far as to make my captcha extremely simple to ease the experience and ended up getting loads of spam…so until a better solution presents itself…
I guess I’d accept SOME kind of captcha to keep spam out, provided it’s reasonably easy (thus my mention of the logo or recognition front). But the opposite, like when wrong captcha eats my comment, what would that be?

[...] Six Improvements to Your Blog Chris Brogan gives us six suggestions on how to improve your blog. All of these work on even blogging sites like wordpress.com where features are limited. Even the mention about having comments. Sure, I’m making you jump thru hoops to leave a comment but the blogger (meaning me) has more of a feel who visits their blog. It also cuts down on the amount of work I’m having to face since I haven’t yet had to clear out Akismet this morning. Also, why not be asked to register at a site? I mean you do it when you want to post to a forum you come across. You had to do it when you created a blog over at wordpress.com. Full-text RSS feeds.
You missed the absolutely biggest step most bloggers can take to improve their blogs.
Learn to write well.
Seriously, no matter what language you are writing in, learn how to write it well. I’m tired of seeing grammatical and spelling errors in blogs. A typo here and there is to be expected, but there is no excuse for poor grammar and consistently poor spelling. Spell check is not enough. Grammar checkers in your word processor are not good enough either.
Pick up a copy of Stunk & White’s “The Elements of Style” and read it. If you still don’t know how to spell properly in the English language, learn phonics. Both of these steps are ridiculously easy and nothing else will have a greater impact on the overall quality of your blog than improving the overall quality of your writing.
Unbelievable. A typo in a comment about spelling and grammar.
Strunk and White’s “The Elements of Style”. Here is direct evidence of how hard it can be to write well consistently, but it’s still worth the effort.
Good list. Some additions: RSS, Trackback links, and I like it immenesly when the blog author responds in the comments every once in a while. It shows you’re listening.
Absolutely right about writing back on the comments. I learned that from Bryan Person.
Great shortlist of tips. Some things a newcomer needs to be reminded of many, many times. Thank you.

Chris,
Great information. I would like to add to the list:
Build your blog on a unique domain. Blogs that appear on the Blogger or WordPress domains lend themselves as being less reputable, similar to a business with a website that has Hotmail, Yahoo or Google email address.
No trackback? I disagree with your position on comments. I posted earlier today more fully on my own blog, but comments are mostly monologues rather than a real dialogue. By reading (via RSS, trackback, etc.) other blogs, thinking about what has been said, and posting a more measured response on our own blogs, we engage in a much richer and more productive conversation than what is seen in comment sections.

Great comments. I think a lot of people do make the mistake of having complicated, long paragraphs. It just makes it intimidating to read, and a lot of people give up. Many bloggers are readers and writers at heart, so they like that kind of thing. But most people aren’t such big readers, and that’s something that writers and readers must remember. Most people want the info quickly and easily, and practically – they’re not SO interested in most of the theory, unless it can be explained fairly easily. Wonderful points you’ve made there!
These are great tips. I noticed however that most blogs out there are super boring because of their techie nature. Unlike yours, most coaching blogs or those that give out tips or suggestions are too wordy and lengthy that they end up annoying the reader. What can you suggest that bloggers must do in order to make their post interesting?

When I first found out about Jes I wasn’t 100% sure if what you said was true, but then I said to myself-what do I have to lose?
Now,after something less than 2 years of using the Jes-Extender I am 1000% convinced that it works.
Unfortunately I don’t have the time to use it 8 hours a day like has recommended (I did that in the first 3 months only) but I use it 2 hours a day (uninterrupted).
I don’t keep notes of the size changes but it has definitely enlarged in size and girth. The most important thing however is that my erections are stronger and durable, the sensation is much better and my confidence now is great!
I am very satisfied with the quality of the product. The only thing I had to purchase since then was silicone tubes. In general, I cannot express how grateful I am. I would say that the Jes-Extender was the best gift I’ve ever made to myself!
