Quick Lifehack: Track your Car with your Todo list

Car

Dude, where is my car? It is not funny, but once in a while I had trouble finding my car in a large car parking complex. I used to trust my memory – I remember the location, usually using the color code and the number on the pole, after I parked my car. However when I come back from a long night partying, I couldn’t remember the location anymore. I was dead-tired to run through couple levels of parking lots.

Solution? Now, I learned to write the location down in my PDA – I treat it just like any other todo. For example: “Find car at Red-5″

This could save you time, if you ever need to search through the parking lots to find your car.

Having lost my car MANY times at the airport, this is an outstanding idea.

I typically snap a picture with my camera phone. Just about the only useful thing I do with that feature. Worked well when we had a rental car at Disney World.

Camera phone’s the way to go. Only trick is remembering to *delete* all the old pictures of parking structures when you’re done with them.

Another option is the write the parking spot number on the back of the parking ticket. I do this when I airport park since it also gives me the name of the lot I ended up in.

I also write the location on the back of the ticket and then put it in my hipster or jot it down in free parking.

Something I’ve found really useful when traveling in a strange city and parking on the street it to carry a portable GPS and store your car as a waypoint. At the end of the day, pull the GPS out to guide you back to the car.

Wow, now that is ingenious. Writing something down before you forget it. Impressive… ;-)

I use DiddleBug to mark an “X” where I parked on a hand-drawn map. Each time I park, I white-out the old X, put in a new one, then set an alarm to move the car before the LA Parking Gremlins give it a ticket. It works very well!

So simple but this has made a big difference since I started doing it a couple of months ago. I travel from London to Zurich every week and usually leave the car in Long term parking.

I use ADB Idea Library on my Windows Mobile device. Each trip has its own branch with each leg of the journey, packing list and To Dos for that trip. Also included is the Parking Zone/Number and Bus Stop number.

I like the camera phone idea too.

I like to compose text messages with parking reminders, addresses, and other little tidbits I’m likely to forget. This has definitely saved a lot of time!

A spin on the camera(phone) trick:

I take a picture of the most visible building or other landmark from my parking spot.

Then, when I’m searching for my car, I can compare my perspective on the landmark to the photo and know which way to go without having to figure out which row, lot, section, etc. I’m in.
