Pouring Ketchup Technique
Okay, I just like how Internet has varies topic for life – including a how-to guide on pouring ketchup (or tomato sauce)! Robert Allgeyer shows what are the right and wrong ways of pouring the ketchup – guess what? The traditional, holding the bottle upside down, and tapping the bottom is not the most effective way to pour the ketchup. The most effective way is to hold it side way and tap at the lower of the neck:
… Merely holding the bottle in the correct position is not very effective. It is necessary to “increase the weight” of the ketchup by applying some G-force. This can be done by making a fist, and tapping the bottle downwards against the fist, to bring the bottle to an abrupt halt. Don’t hurt yourself! If your hands are delicate, you may try some other method of applying an abrupt stop to the bottle, provided that the stop is not rigid or fragile, and that you mind where the ketchup is going to emerge. Striking the bottle at the upper side of the neck is much less effective, since it applies the G-force in the wrong direction…

I’ve always known not to hit the bottom of the bottle to extract ketchup, but I’ve found the best way to pour it is similar to the technique demonstrated here. However, instead of an upward motion against the neck, I apply a very small force to the shoulder of the bottle (hold the bottle the same way, but hit the shoulder upwards toward the bottom).. about one hit does it to pop the air bubble inside and the ketchup just flows out.

With Heinz ketchup the easy trick to remember is to tap on the “57″ (a bit of raised glass on the side of the bottle) as you pour.
Works every time.

Simple answer: “Hit the 57!”
(look at a glass bottle of Heinz to see what I am talking about)

Recently I conducted a science experiment for school, with my chosen topic being The Most Effective Method of Removing Tomato Sauce From The Bottle. I did several tests to find out the best way to shake/tap/jerk and hold the bottle to get the most sauce out of the bottle in a certain time limit of 15 seconds. I found the fastest way of getting sauce out of a t.sauce bottle with a “fat-neck” (Rosella brand) was to hold the bottle completely still and inverted. The least effective method was to simply hold the bottle inverted and tap the bottom of the bottle. I am however assuming that these particular results apply only to this brand and shaped bottle of t. sauce, as I only tested the Rosella brand fat-necked bottle. This is perhaps due to this brand of sauce being particularly runny compared to other brands.
