Introduction to 90 Online File Storage Services

Listible has a list of online services on file storage. The list currently stays at 93 sites – many for you to choose from. Most of them are free and easy to use. You can use them to send big files, or backup your documentations. Some services can be accessed from your web browser, others may have a client program for you to auto-backup your hard drive. I personally like the Mozy Remote Backup, which provides 2GB of free backup space. Best of all, you can access an encryption key for your account for adding security and protect privacy for your files. I have included the list here by its javascript feature:

The list is provided by Listible. It is a new service where you can include any of their list into your web site. All you need to do is cut and paste a line of javascript into your web page (and even into your blogging software like Wordpress!).

X-Drive ate my money. they don’t have any cancel button on their website. have to call an international number to cancel. basically they are fraud.

Is ‘bbDRIVE’ really Windows only? I have a Mac and really need a good backup through online, but don’t wanna pay for something, e.g., Mac.com subscription. Any others? Too bad bbDrive is probably for Windoze only, cuz 10 GB makes it the teh best.

Personally, I use Backupright http://www.backupright.com – They have a Mac OS client and Windows too, that way I use one service to backup both my mac book and desktop. Its the only one out of those that looks to be multi os and automated not just a web dav folder of some sort.

Take a look at http://www.drivehq.com with its best client software and FTP support, it blows away this list. I think it’s meaningless to list 90 such providers when most of them are not worth a try. DriveHQ is THE website for online storage, sharing and backup. They not only offer free storage but also provide excellent tools for you to upload many files and big files

  • Matt says on August 23rd, 2006 at 7:56 am

You have to try IBackup for Windows for a quick and safe backup of files and folders. None other than PC World recently rated IBackup as the `best all-around’ service’ in a review of online backup services.

IBackup also has several subscription plans to suit a wide variety of users. IBackup is probably one of the very few web-based services that allows for easy cancellation of your account!

With a pioneer application like IBackup for Windows you can backup files and folders and schedule backups easily. All the backups are secure with the highest level of 128-bit SSL encryption on transmission.

You can map your IBackup account as a network drive on the user’s computer with IDrive. Users can map, drag and drop files to their IBackup account from Windows explorer. It also allows users to open and save files stored in their IBackup online accounts directly from their associated applications like Microsoft Office. IBackup for Windows also supports backing up of your mapped drives. You can view the scheduled backup/restore jobs in all your IBackup accounts by using the ‘Manage all the Scheduled Jobs’ feature.

Workgroup Subscription and Enhanced Backup Plans have the option to create Sub-Accounts. A Sub-Account is an IBackup account that you can create on any folder in your online backup account to provide access only to files (and folders) within that folder to other employees and business partners.

`Privately Share’ data instantly with another IBackup user using IBackup’s browser-based application called =’http://www.ibackup.com/webmanager.htm’>Web-Manager. Using Web-Manager you can create new folders, upload files, move, rename, delete and search files in your online account.

It’s better that you try a free trial of IBackup to get a real feel about its features.

In order to get a Free 5GB Xdrive Plus storage account you will need an AOL screen name, if you don’t have one then you can signup for one free and get an AOL email account with 2GB of space too.

Now that you have your new AOL screen name and password you can use them to sign in to your Xdrive Plus account and store many types of digital assets, like Word files, Excel files, PDF files, pictures, music, your browser bookmarks, your AOL email attachments, AOL Pictures.

Using the Xdrive Plus Web Interface you’ll be able to upload files or folders, share them with others. These files can be pictures, Word files, Excel files, etc.

Using our Desktop Application you will be able to do things with your Xdrive Plus account, like drag and drop files from your local (C:\ drive) to your Internet Hard Drive (X:\ drive).

The Desktop Application also provides other features, like scheduling backups, and backup now.

Our competitors do not offer the combination of services that an Xdrive Plus account offers. If you need more space then you can upgrade to 50GB for $9.95 a month or $99.50 annually.

If you are an AOL consumers who subscribes to other AOL Premium Services of more then $24.95 you’ll get your Xdrive Plus 50GB for Free.

Now that you’ve got your Xdrive Plus account you can take your data with you where ever you go. How?

Using your AOL credentials you can login using any computer that has an Internet connection, just use a browser and go to xdrive.com and enter your screen name and password to access your digital assets anytime, anyplace.

Do you have a WAP enabled PDA or cell phone? Soon you will be able to access your digital assets stored on your Internet Hard Drive using Xdrive Mobile Service and download your digital assets.

Thanks and Best Regards, Doctor Xdrive

Here’s a site that does everything asked for above.

It provides you with 5GB of storage, does not delete files, is free, and permits large files to be uploaded (1 GB).

It also has special handling for photo/image files. It let’s you selectively share contents with groups you set up, to the folder level. Finally, it permits you to upload in batch – none of this file by file upload like most other online storage sites.

Dr. XDrive is a quack and should lose his license or be sued for malpractice. After setting up 3 new AOL accounts, I have been unable to give file access to a collegue. Emails to tech support assign you a Issue # & a standard message. No one ever follows up with you. Calls to them are routed through India and they can only read scripts. No product knowledge. My issue was escalated 3 times – still no response! Oh, and that Issue number you’re given – if you get someone on the phone they can’t look it up anywhere. Obviously bogus! A 6 week nightmare for me. Last 2 weeks, calls to tech support get you answering machine only. Of course no return phone calls if you leave a message. Thanks for nothing AOL!!!!!

  • DAM Pro says on July 23rd, 2007 at 10:36 pm

As an Ex-Xdrive’r I’m aware that Xdrive has issues that affect consumers ability to due things that any consumer of an online service would expect that they should be able to do, like, to be able login into the service 98%-100% of the time, whether the service is Free or you pay for it.

While Xdrive has been the leader in DAM Industry for several years and have seen bankruptcies and poor management/leadership in there many reincarnations. Like, the switch from 100% Free Service to Free 50MBs accounts, 5GB and higher quota plans in the Paying Services options, and now back to a focus on the 5GB quota for a Free service, as long as you are have an AOL Screen Name.

AOL management has been in part played a key role in these issues that Xdrive consumers have been facing. Be clear on the thinking behind it, it’s to improve your overall experience when using the One-Stop AOL Portal, known as http://www.AOL.com, here you’ll be able to get an Free email account (AOL or AIM), Free storage and sharing capabilities with Xdrive (don’t forget to check out the new feature at Xdrive, Xdrive Shows), AOL Pictures, Instant Messaging, and many more cool Free services.

Now having said all that, later I will post information about the DAM Industry and the current and new players competing for consumers Digital Assets.

In my opinion, Microsoft is going to the biggest player in the DAM Industry in the near future. I beleive that MS has a vision that will change PC’s as we know them. PC’s will have no hard drives.

Yes, that’s correct, no hard drives.

You’ll store all your Digital Assets on Microsoft’s storage servers.

Think I am crazy? There’s already a player in this new field. It’s starts by using the same technique AOL used when they started. Dumb the whole thing down as far as you can!

Like simple to use custom made applications, a browser, email application, and UI for navigation around the box, using an Open Source OS.

If you want to know what it is, I’ll be glad to post information about it.

I’ll comment more about the DAM Industry!

    Thanks and Best Regards,
    DAM Pro

  • Need I say more? says on August 14th, 2007 at 2:27 am

What stories I could tell you all about Xdrive! But I can’t! NDA! What I can say now is to confirm some of your above comments. Yes, that’s the number to call for Xdrive support but it’s not the only one consumers can use to reach out to AOL for support on any of their services. So keep that in mind next time. Another thing, AOL recently pulled off any references to the support phone number or email address from within your account. I am sure that some of you might have noticed this! You won’t find it listed anyplace in the TOS, web page, FAQs, or anywhere. Think of it this way. How can any employee of AOL support a product that he/she has never even used? Did AOL train every employee at their Manila or India call centres to support this feature rich, mutli purpose, interactive Digital Asset Management application? No way! Impossible! So that’s the level of support you are going to get from any company that has to save money by employing outsourced ‘talent’. This ‘talent’ pool will not be able to help you fix any issues, wether it be an issue with the Desktop Appication, the Web Interface, Xdrive Shows, not to mention the more complex issues, like, network protocol issues, error codes that get thrown at consumers. They have never seen it or used the product let alone done any trouble shooting to that high level of technical expertise. They read a script and give you suggestions of things that were given to them from experienced Xdrive staff that are outdated and don’t even apply anymore. Need I say more?

P.S. Let’s not spread incorrect rumors about a true Xdrive evangelist like Doctor Xdrive. I meet him, over at MySpace.com! He helped Xdrive consumers in the Xdrive Forums and in oh so many other ways but he lost the fight to keep support in house at Xdrive and out the door he went! Along with many other great contributors to Xdrive.

  • John says on August 20th, 2007 at 3:29 am

I am very impressed with your patience to list so many online storage service websites. However, without providing some feature comparisons/reviews only confuses more people!

Of the 80+ online storage service providers, 90% of them provide poor service with few features. Worse, at least 80% of them will be out of business in a few years. With Microsoft’s SkyDrive in beta and possible launch of Gdrive, 90% of companies will be out of business for sure.

If you are not serious about your files and are satisfied with a free service, and you only have a few files that you occasionally want to share with other people, then yes, any website will do.

If you are serious to protect your precious personal or business data, or you want to share files with a group of people for business purposes, or if you have a lot of files, then choose the best service provider, who has been in business for years, has a state-of-the-art facility, profitable and doesn’t rely on VC fund. DriveHQ offers many times better and more features than any other service providers in this business. To name some of their features:

Online storage, web access, FileManager client software, Desktop Express integrates with Explorer, DriveHQ automatic Online Backup, Folder Synchronization, Group sharing, offline access, Sharing with read and read-write access, publish file links, data encryption, upload/download any size files with automatic resuming features, access with FTP clients, group accounts, compressed transfer; private domain website; SMTP/POP3/Outlook email hosting with unlimited mailbox size support.

Forget about the rest of 80+ companies.
I might go to the other extreme to only list http://www.drivehq.com as a true online storage service company.

    - uploads still have problems, files don’t arrive or after weeks
    - old files have disappeared and recovery will take many more weeks

    - credit card withdrawals are reported to be made too soon

I am quite surprised not to find http://www.datazap.net listed.
They provide unlimited storage space and unlimited bandwidth at under $5 a month. I’ve never seen the price fluctuate in the more than 5 years that I have used them. They provide ftp access, as well as online tools. There is virtually no setup or other software required(client with web access of course).

I’d give them a whirl before trying anything else out there, even if it is just for backing up files.

They have awesome turn around on any issues that you may have, and might I add that I’ve only once ever seen an issue with servers, and in that case a backup server came online. Honestly, never knew there was an issue until the owner emailed me and told me.

    datazap.net, try it.

    Hi!

I have just recently started using http://www.files-4-all.com

It has a no frills interface. If one needs searching abilities, nice interfaces… forget it. If you just need a place to upload a file to, you are given a file id after the uploading is done, so you can access your file later on, or share it with your buddies.

    That’s all it is.

  • Apagador says on March 28th, 2008 at 11:37 am

Oh, forgot to say, they have a file size limit, at files-4-all, but no limit to the ammount you can globally upload.

    Cheers

  • Danny Lakeman says on April 15th, 2008 at 2:53 pm

At least that is a file size limit you are aware of. Many providers have high or zero up limit but when you go to do a bulk restore (which will always be an emergency) you find they limit download to a paltry limit per month unless you pay. Blackmail or as the industry term goes, “hotel California for data”
I ran with a number of free suppliers. I discovered in fairness it is too serious a product for anyone to provide on an add earning only basis. I now have a commercial, not so cheap but excellent uk online server backup system with http://www.backupanytime.com

Take a look at http://www.wwd.net – it works with any FTP program and also has web interface.

FilesAnywhere is not listed here. FA has been around for ages and still has more features than any mentioned here – seems like a major omission that your list didn’t already have it. FA is ideal for photo sharing, direct drive letter webdav access, backup, etc. It has it all.

You get a 1GB free account with no ads. They just released a new version. Definitely worth checking out, even their free service is great.

A number of the sites listed do not offer online backup services. There is even a listing odf a mortgage site!
Credit crunch or not, thats hardly any way related to online storage.
We would appreciate being added to the list. We are specialist online backup providers. We do nothing else. Not even mortgage approval. (:

Listen up Xdrive Consumers….! XDMOlson is going to hook you all up with the easiest way to transfer your Xdrive digital assets to another provider.

I know there are a lot of other providers out there, check out my previous post about the Ultimate Review List of Best Free Online Storage and Backup Application Services…

However XDMOlson is going to recommend selecting ElephantDrive for current Xdrive consumers. They have worked out an agreement with Xdrive to make transferring those digital assets over as easy as possible.

    The twelve days of Xdrive…

$86,609 that’s this year’s cost for the twelve days of Xmas, according to the annual “Christmas Price Index” compiled by PNC Wealth Management, which tallies the single partridge in a pear tree to the 12 drummers drumming, purchased repeatedly as the song suggests. The price is up $8,508 or 10.9 percent, from $78,100 last year.

The Xdrive service will be shutting down on January 12 2009. What will the last twelve days of Xdrive cost you? Get your music, your pictures, your documents. I would not recommend waiting until the last day. Get it done today…!

I recommend choosing ElephantDrive and to make transferring those digital assets over as easy as possible just click the link http://www.elephantdrive.com/m/ct.aspx?ici=267 …this is the Xdrive to ElephantDrive migration page.

ElephantDrive is the only solution provider working in cooperation with Xdrive using their Open Xdrive API. While competitors of ElephantDrive may offer discounts on their subscription plans you’ll have to do all the work of transferring your digital assets. ElephantDrive is committed to helping every Xdrive account holder make transitioning their digital assets seamless and transparent by using the Xdrive to ElephantDrive migration page.

ElephantDrive offers packages that are designed to protect the digital assets of individuals, SMBs, and large organizations.

Xdrive consumers with questions about transferring their digital assets over to ElephantDrive can check our Common Questions page.

After getting burned by xdrive I switched over to http://www.myotherdrive.com. I’ve been very happy with their online backup offering. They do encryption, etc. and it only costs 1.99 / month. That’s less than my daily trip to Starbuck’s :o)

  • VOSI.biz says on March 8th, 2009 at 11:15 pm

It is interesting to note that many of the service providers are already gone, e.g. XDrive, MediaMax / Streamload, OmniDrive, etc; With today’s business environment, it is expected 80% of online storage or online backup companies cannot survive because they never had a profit model other than offering cheaper or even free service!

A company in such a crowded market space must be able to really compete, but not just by offering cheaper / free service. VOSI.biz is a different company, we focus on product quality and service quality, we are keen to develop better products, more features than any of our competitors. We target premium users and business users who are more willing to pay for our services. We create value and save money for our customers.

Please visit us at: http://www.vosi.biz/. We offer a lot more than Online Storage. Our services include Remote File Server, FTP Server, Email Server, Automatic Online Backup and Email Address Book backup services.

Thanks for the great list! But one omission I am oblidged to point out…

TrueShare.com (http://www.trueshare.com) has been offering secure file storage, sharing, and backup for more than 5 years with unlimited users on business accounts.

In 2008, TrueShare.com was named a WebWare 100 Award Finalist in the Utility/Security category.

TrueShare.com’s product offering was initially solely business-focused. In August 2007, it introduced its Individual offering, targeting single users and emphasizing the Send-a-Link and Direct Link features.

In March 2009 the company launched its PhotoShare widget, which connects images from TrueShare.com with other applications, blogs, newsletters, forums posts, and websites across the web. TrueShare .com has plans to release the file share widget in August 2009.

    Thanks for adding TrueShare :)
Looks like the one I will be going
    with.

I researched them a bit after reading
your comment and looks like the one
with the best services. Also their price
is awesome for what they offer.

    Thanks again !

I really like http://contentcube.com . As a designer, I love that it can handle photoshop and illustrator files and let me custom brand the pages my customers use to retrieve their proofs. Very cool.
