How to pull an all-nighter

For your work project or school assignment, you may sometimes need to work through the night. Frankly, partying all night is fine, but doing productive work is what makes it difficult. A student Christian Montoya shares his tips on stay awake:

  • Drink coffee/tea/etc
  • Eat a meal
  • Shower
  • Listen to music
  • If you can afford to, take breaks
  • As a last resort, get up and walk around

I have pulled quite a few all nighters, and feel the need to ad: You HAVE to be very well hydrated to make it through the night. I have found that guzzling water through the night is far more effective than coffee, and I would save the coffee drinking until the wee morning hours when you really need that extra jolt. Even if there is no physical reason for the water to be helping, it makes you have to run to the bathroom with some regularity. That stimulation alone will keep the blood circulating.

I’m pulling one right now. Another nice trick is to take a short nap (one or two REM cycles) right before the sun rises and getting up after. After a certain while, it’s smarter to sleep a bit and work more efficiently afterward then to just plow through.

The last resort will definitely do the trick. I see call center agents working in the night shift do this all the time. They either take walks to the bathroom every hour or so, to make sure they make it until the end of their shift. Listening to upbeat music pumps your body up as well.
