Five excellent mind habits to develop
Many times you may hear about training your mind can make you more smart and efficient. But how? Paul’s tips has a set of five quick habits to train your mind that is worth a read if you are interested on such topic:
- Never let a word pass you by
- Try doing everyday sums in your head
- Learn about something you wouldn’t normally bother with
- Read non-fiction rather than fiction
- Always be ready to question your own beliefs
In my opinion, Learn about something you wouldn’t normally bother with is a good one among other four. Learning something which is not within your comfort area will usually use some other parts of your mind. This will give you opportunities to utilize different knowledge and ideas in your memory, hence it will effectively improve your mind.

I find item #4 deeply suspect:
“Fiction is great. It’s fun and entertaining, but it doesn’t have much to teach us. Or rather, it doesn’t have anywhere near as much as non-fiction does. If you like to read to pass the time, pick up a non-fiction title. Many of them are more entertaining than you may expect.”
What does non-fiction have to teach us that fiction lacks exactly? Rather, isn’t there something fiction has to teach us that non-fiction simply can’t?
Most importantly, why present this as a zero-sum game? I read both fiction and non-fiction, and wouldn’t give up either.

M,
I think this “tip” is aimed more at people like me - I read fiction CONSTANTLY. I always tell myself I should read the non-fiction sitting on my shelf, but I keep going back to fiction - even re-reading good books over and over. Fiction is great! But if you really want to build your mind, you need to read non-fiction - even if you keep reading fiction too.

These tips are no doubt excellent, we always do the things we are familiar with and don’t bother outselves to do other things so this habit should be eliminated.
By doing so we may develop outselves.
