Finding Motivation: What To Do When You Don’t Feel Like Doing Anything

Many people should come across this before: Sometimes you may find yourself not interested to do anything productive. You want to chill out and take a rest, but you already took a long break. Simply, you’re not motivated. What should you do? Chris Widener at his site Made for Success suggests number of ways to break through the phase:

  • Honestly evaluate whether or not you need a break.
  • Start small.
  • Change your routine.
  • Reward yourself.
  • Reconnect the action with pleasure rather than pain.

Change the routine sometimes work wonder. Human being is a creative creature, you will get sick on some routine work. Change the routine to fool your brain this is a whole new stuff.

Steven Pressfield’s book, The War of Art, gives a strong point of view about what to do when you don’t feel like doing anything. Acknowledge that the malevolent force of Resistance has its claws in you, and is taking great pleasure in your lack of motivation. Then, sit down and get to work – or think of something you can do that moves you closer to your long or short-term goals. No more breaks. No more surfing the net. Get busy. Crush Resistance before it sucks more of your life away.

Good idea to change routine. There are plenty of ways to motivate oneself. If you are caught in a rut, meditation and exercising can help. Some experts say running actually helps increase brain productivity and thus refreshes mind.

Lately I have been feeling like not doing anything. My doctor says I am depressed and put me on Lexapro but I do not find any improvement in my situation. I always feel very tired, dislike going to work or doing anything and am always feeling very sad and dejected. Can someone please help

Braj!! I feel exactly like you do. I’m currently at work, surfing the web –looking for help to my problem. I used to take Lexapro a long time ago. My doctor told me I was depressed and it should help my feelings of not caring about anything. (drowning puppies, babies…etc) I was literally numb to the world. Well, after a while of taking it, it seemed to have an effect on me that I didn’t have a care in the world! An anvil could fall on my head and everything would still be peachy! So, you see, that wasn’t good either, so I stopped taking Lexapro. This was several years ago now, and I find myself thinking about the drug again… Anything to make me not feel so down and worthless… I just don’t know what to do!
