Download: IHMC CmapTools – A concept map software

IHMC CmapTools is a software to construct concept map. What is a concept map?

… is a technique for visualizing the relationships between different concepts. A concept map is a diagram showing the relationships between concepts. Concepts are connected with labelled arrows, in a downward-branching hierarchical structure. The relationship between concepts is articulated in linking phrases, e.g., “gives rise to”, “results in”, “is required by,” or “contributes to”. –Wikipedia

CmapTools

It may look similar to mind map, but its functionality is different. Mind map is supposed to reflect what you think within one main concept, where concept map may have several concepts. Another difference is the representation – concept map can be represented by a network, but mind map is usually represented as a tree structure. Refers to this document for more information on concept map.

The CmapTools program empowers users to construct, navigate, share and criticize knowledge models represented as concept maps. It allows users to, among many other features, construct their Cmaps in their personal computer, share them on servers (CmapServers) anywhere on the Internet, link their Cmaps to other Cmaps on servers, automatically create web pages of their concept maps on servers, edit their maps synchronously (at the same time) with other users on the Internet, and search the web for information relevant to a concept map.

We have successfully used Cmap to support collaboration on complex technology projects.

The interface is very efficient for fast concept diagramming. This is the key feature that differentiates Cmap from other diagramming tools (Visio, MindManager…).

It also contains a service to share Cmaps using public servers. This is very helpful to control versioning and allow for asynchronous contribution by team members in different time zones.

I recommend using the tool for:

Online meetings that require participants to agree on process

Collaboration on objects and relationships between objects in an application

The collaboration features in CmapTools allow for free Cmap sharing using the Public servers and for real-time map editing among users — puts it in a category by itself in terms of concept mapping software. Servers all over the world allow users to search for maps on all topics. Great tool!
