Creating your Personal Mission Statements
At QuintCareers, Randall S. Hansen has written an article on creating Personal Mission Statement. Personal? you asked. What are the differences between a personal and a company mission statment? It is similar to company’s for providing directions, but it creates a set of things that is important to your life and you will stick to that direction when you are in crosspaths:
… A personal mission statement is a bit different from a company mission statement, but the fundamental principles are the same. Writing a personal mission statement offers the opportunity to establish what’s important and perhaps make a decision to stick to it before we even start a career. Or it enables us to chart a new course when we’re at a career crossroads. Steven Covey (in First Things First) refers to developing a mission statement as ‘connecting with your own unique purpose and the profound satisfaction that comes from fulfilling it.’ …
There are five steps that he mentioned on developing your own mission statement:
- Step 1: Identify Past Successes.
- Step 2: Identify Core Values.
- Step 3: Identify Contributions.
- Step 4: Identify Goals.
- Step 5: Write Mission Statement.

The easiest method I’ve found is to focus on what you want other people to think of you. Do you want to be known as a hard worker? Awesome programmer? Gentleman? Scholar? Write a some statements about who you are and then put them somewhere you’ll see them everyday to keep you focused.
